How do I join an ODF Battalion?
Typically, just contact us through this website with your USPS mailing address and we will send you a packet with additional information, enlistment forms, maps and dates of our next training function.
Members are expected to be at a minimum of 12 training sessions per year (any within the state) and attend the annual Statewide FTX, unless otherwise excused. Maintain their gear in an acceptable manner, pay dues of $10 per month, and coordinate with their fire team.
Despite many misconceptions, the NEODF and the ODF at large receive no State monies. All funding is provided by dues, fund raisers, and donations. In order for the Unit to function and provide excellent training opportunities it must have income. Dues are part of that income which helps to cover the costs of; training materials, blank ammunition, pyrotechnics, unit gear, published material, instructor fees, and other miscellaneous costs. Essentially, it's all part of being well regulated.
Members in good standing (in the NEODF) who have a personal hardship are advised to appeal to the 1st Sergeant, who will consult with member(s) of the senior officer staff. On a case-per-case basis, qualified members will be allowed to make up their past dues in hours/months dues ratio during one of the Battalion Range Improvements.
Nominal gear for all members is uniform (woodland BDUs) and personal kit. Usually this consists of some type of load bearing gear (Army Surplus or commercial Vests), a firearm of your choosing, and other gear as stipulated in our personal gear list.
You don't necessarily have to buy a firearm at once, though in time you will be expected to provide your own. The NEODF prefers that members choose magazine fed rifles or police/ military type shotguns. Pistols are optional.
Individuals who subscribe to racist or exclusive ideologies (Aryan Nation, Neo-Nazis, KKK, and other 'subversive' groups) do not reflect the standards and mission of Ohio Defense Force. In fact if you join our organization and then join a hate motivated group your membership within the ODF will cease.
Individuals who have a felony conviction or who are otherwise prohibited from
possessing firearms.
I see that you use rank, how does that work?
Rank is used to denote a level of responsibility within the organization (i.e. who does what). Since everyone in the ODF is a volunteer, it has less to do with pay grade. Members who can provide a copy of their DD-214 will begin with the rank (or corresponding US Army equivalent) they held in the military. Promotions to higher ranks are based on ability, time in grade, Unit needs, and willingness to be held to a higher level of responsibility.
Formal training is held on the 3rd Saturday of every month (1st Battalion/ SODF also meets on the 3rd Sunday of every month). Other events, overnight FTXs, and informal trainings are scheduled throughout the year. See our training calendar for specific dates.
Sure. Though our rule is that after 3 training sessions you are required to join the organization. From time to time we also offer training dates that are considered to be "open trainings"; these are for anyone who would like to participate - no strings attached. On the other end of the spectrum some of our training is closed and not open to non-members or persons still in their probationary period.
We DO try to utilize anyone with disabilities who wish to serve their community. If you want to be a member we will find a mutually acceptable function for you. Of course during training you are always welcome to participate as much or as little as you are comfortable with.
The terms FTX and Operations are often used simultaneously. Though they have two different meanings. FTX is an acronym for Field Training Exercise, which means that the training extends into the night and that members should be prepared to camp over. The usage of the term Operation (which is often in conjunction with an interesting suffix; i.e. Operation Frigid Strike) means that the training format is scenario based - usually this means that there has been considerably more effort to develop an effective training experience as opposed to raw format lecture/ discussion/ practice type training.
